San Sebastián, or Donostia as the locals call it in Basque, is a striking coastal city, quickly gaining a reputation as a destination. Nestled between the mountains and the Bay of Biscay in Spain’s Basque Country, it offers dramatic scenery, good gastronomy, a rich cultural identity, and an effortlessly elegant atmosphere .

Whether you are dreaming of a ceremony overlooking the ocean, an intimate celebration at a Basque farmhouse, or a grand affair in a historic palace, San Sebastian has something to offer. This guide walks you through everything you need to know to plan a destination wedding here, from choosing the right season and finding your venue, to building a vendor team.

Why Choose San Sebastian for Your Wedding?

San Sebastián is often described as one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, and for good reason. La Concha beach, frequently ranked among the best urban beaches in Europe, provides a cinematic backdrop. The old town is a maze of narrow streets filled with pintxo bars, while the surrounding hills offer sweeping views of the coastline.

San Sebastian also holds more Michelin stars restaurants per square metre than almost anywhere else in the world. Even beyond the fine dining, the pintxo culture is really fun — guests can spend an entire evening hopping from bar to bar, sampling small plates with friends. For couples who want their wedding to be a gastronomic experience as much as a celebration of love, San Sebastián is a good option.

The city is also very well connected. San Sebastián airport (EAS) offers connections via Madrid and Barcelona, and Bilbao airport (BIO) is just over an hour’s drive away with far more international routes. Biarritz airport in France is even closer, about 45 minutes by car, with direct flights from several European cities. This makes it genuinely accessible for international guests.

When Should You Start Planning?

For a destination wedding in San Sebastián, aim to start planning at least a year to a year and half in advance. The best venues and vendors book up quickly during peak season, and coordinating travel logistics for international guests takes time. If you are set on a summer weekend, starting even earlier is wise.

Choosing the Best Time of Year

San Sebastián has a mild Atlantic climate which is cooler and greener than southern Spain, with a character closer to the French Atlantic coast.

Late Spring (May – June) is arguably one of the best window. The landscape is lush, temperatures are comfortable at 18–24°C, the days are long, and the city is not yet in full tourist season. June in particular is magical, with golden evening light that lasts well past 9pm.

Summer (July – August) brings the warmest and driest weather, with temperatures around 25–30°C. However, July and August are peak tourist season, so the city is lively but also busier. Vendor availability is tighter, so book well ahead and plan for potential high heat.

Early Autumn (September – October) is another excellent choice. September still feels like summer, with warm days and fewer crowds. The surrounding countryside turns golden, and the atmosphere is more relaxed. October can be rainier depending on the years, but the city’s beauty holds up in any weather.

A note on rain: San Sebastián receives more rainfall than southern Spain, particularly outside summer. Always ensure your venue has a solid indoor backup option or a great outdoor cover option. That said, the lush green landscape that comes with the rain is part of what makes the Basque Country so beautiful.

Finding Your Perfect Venue

The Basque Country offers a wonderful range of venue styles, from grand hotels to rural estates.

Historic and urban venues in San Sebastián itself include the iconic Hotel María Cristina, an elegant riverside landmark perfect for couples who want city glamour, and the Miramar Palace, a stunning royal residence with gardens overlooking La Concha. The Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra offers classic sophistication with panoramic bay views.

Rural estates and farmhouses (caseríos) in the hills surrounding the city provide a more intimate, countryside atmosphere. These traditional Basque farmhouses, often set among rolling green hills and vineyards, are ideal for couples who want something more personal. Venues like Finca Narzabal near Azpeitia and Hotel Iturregi offer that blend of rustic charm and refined elegance.

Coastal venues along the Basque coastline, from Zarautz to Hondarribia just at the frontier with France provide dramatic clifftop or beachfront settings for ceremonies. I have made two articles about venues in the basque country which you can check here and there.

When evaluating venues, consider guest capacity, whether exclusive use is available, on-site accommodation, catering options, and accessibility from the airport and hotels.

What Does a Wedding in San Sebastian Cost?

As a general guide, a well-organised destination wedding in the Basque Country with 50 to 80 guests typically falls between €20,000 and €45,000. For larger celebrations of 100+ guests at premium venues with top-tier catering, budgets of €50,000 to €80,000+ are more realistic.

Catering is often the largest single expense with the venue. High-quality Basque catering ranges from roughly €150 to €300+ per person depending on the menu and service style. The good news is that even mid-range Basque cuisine is great so you do not need to book a Michelin-starred chef for your guests to eat very well. France being right at the frontier 30 minutes away also offers even more great options.

Compared to Barcelona or Mallorca, San Sebastián can offer better value for a comparable level of quality, particularly for couples willing to look at venues slightly outside the city centre.

A Note on Legal Requirements

For most international couples, getting legally married in Spain is not straightforward. Spanish law typically requires at least one partner to have been a resident for a minimum period, and the bureaucratic process can be lengthy and complex for non-residents.

The most common and practical solution is to get legally married in your home country and hold a symbolic ceremony in San Sebastián. Symbolic ceremonies have no legal restrictions, they can be held anywhere, officiated by anyone you choose, and designed entirely around your preferences. This is what the vast majority of destination couples in Spain do, and it allows you to focus entirely on creating the celebration you want, without the paperwork.

Building Your Vendor Team

Wedding Planner

For a destination wedding in the Basque Country, a local wedding planner is highly recommended. They will have established relationships with trusted vendors, understand the local logistics, and can navigate any language barriers. Several planners in the region specialise in international weddings and work comfortably in English, Spanish, and French.

Catering

Basque cuisine is world-renowned, and your wedding menu will be one of the highlights for your guests. Many venues have in-house catering or preferred partners. Whether you go for a formal seated dinner, a family-style feast, or a pintxo-inspired cocktail reception, the quality of local ingredients: fresh seafood, Idiazabal cheese, txuleta steak will speak for itself.

Photography and Videography

The dramatic coastal light and varied landscapes of the Basque Country make it a photographer’s paradise. Expect to budget €1,500–€5,000+ for photography depending on coverage and experience. The golden hour at La Concha or the green hills behind the city provide stunning backdrops.

Music and Entertainment

Live music adds enormously to the atmosphere. For cocktail hour, a jazz trio or acoustic guitarist works beautifully, especially in an outdoor Basque setting. For the reception, a DJ or live band will carry the evening forward. If your venue is rural, check noise curfew restrictions in advance.

Live Illustration

A unique and increasingly popular addition to destination weddings in the Basque Country is live wedding illustration. During the cocktail hour or reception, a live artist creates original watercolour or pencil portraits of guests in real time, a hand-crafted keepsake that guests take home at the end of the night. Unlike a photo booth, live illustration adds an artistic and personal dimension that guests genuinely remember. For couples planning a wedding in San Sebastian or anywhere in the Basque Country, Laehui Studio is based in the Basque Country nearby San Sebastián, specialising in live watercolour and pencil portraits at weddings and events across the region.

Getting Around: Transport and Logistics

Most international guests will fly into either Bilbao (BIO), Biarritz (BIQ), or San Sebastián (EAS) airport. From Bilbao, the drive to San Sebastián takes about 1 hour 15 minutes along a scenic motorway. From Biarritz, it is about 45 minutes.

If your venue is in the city, guests can get around easily on foot or by taxi. For rural venues outside the city, arrange a shuttle or minibus service for the evening; taxis in the Basque countryside are not always easy to find, especially late at night. Several local transport companies offer wedding packages with a driver for the full evening.

For guests who want to explore the region before or after the wedding, renting a car is a great option. The Basque coastline, the wine region of Rioja (about 1.5 hours south), and the French Basque Country are all within easy reach.

A practical tip: create a travel page on your wedding website with clear information about airport options, transfer recommendations, and driving directions to your venue.

Making It an Experience

San Sebastián naturally lends itself to a multi-day celebration. A welcome dinner the evening before at a local restaurant or pintxo bar is a wonderful way to bring guests together, and the old town is perfect for a relaxed group evening hopping between bars. Make sure to ask your venue or to any local for pintxo bars recommendations: some spots in the old town cater more to tourists than locals that might not satisify more advanced foodies. A surf lesson at Zurriola beach (or even a day in Biarritz, THE place in the area to do that!), a hike up Monte Igueldo followed by drinks at the top, or renting bikes along the coastal path to Pasaia all work beautifully for groups. For the more adventurous, Monte Ulia offers a coastal trail through forest with dramatic cliff views, about 2.5 hours round trip and far less touristy. A day trip along the coast to Hondarribia or Zarautz is another memorable option.

A brunch the morning after, perhaps with views of the bay, is the ideal way to close the weekend before guests head home.
